Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum total weight a trailer is engineered to weigh when fully loaded, including the trailer itself. Subtract the empty (curb) weight from the GVWR to find your usable payload. Never exceed GVWR, even if the axles appear to have spare capacity.
Payload equals GVWR minus the trailer's empty weight. A 7,000 lb GVWR trailer weighing 1,900 lbs empty gives you roughly 5,100 lbs of cargo capacity. Also confirm your truck's tow rating, payload rating, and rear axle rating, since the tongue weight rides on the truck.
Aim for 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight on the ball for a conventional bumper pull. Too little tongue weight is the leading cause of trailer sway. Gooseneck and fifth wheel setups target 20 to 25 percent pin weight instead.
Texas generally requires trailer brakes above 4,500 pounds gross weight. A trailer over 4,500 but not over 15,000 pounds may be exempt when drawn at 30 mph or less; at higher speeds, statutory axle-brake rules apply. Verify the current Texas Transportation Code and manufacturer requirements for your combination.
Electric brakes are controlled from inside the tow vehicle by a brake controller and can be adjusted or manually applied. Surge brakes are hydraulic and self-actuating, triggered by the trailer pushing against the coupler, which makes them common on boat trailers that get submerged.
Single axle trailers are lighter, cheaper, easier to maneuver by hand, and fine under about 3,000 lbs of payload. Tandem axles carry more, track better at highway speed, and let you limp to a shop on a blown tire. Most commercial buyers choose tandem.
Torsion axles ride more smoothly, sit lower, and require less maintenance, which is ideal for equipment and enclosed trailers. Leaf springs equalize load between tandem axles, are cheaper to repair anywhere in Texas, and remain the practical choice for heavy work trailers.
Measure your largest regular load, add two feet of working room, and then confirm the payload math. Most homeowners are well served by a 6x12; landscape and contractor crews usually land on a 7x16 or 7x20 tandem.
Inspect and repack bearings annually or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Trailers used on dusty caliche roads or submerged at boat ramps need service more often. Oil-bath hubs allow visual level checks between services.
Inflate to the maximum cold pressure printed on the sidewall unless the trailer manufacturer specifies otherwise. Trailer tires are stiff-sidewall ST rated tires and underinflation is the primary cause of heat-related blowouts in Texas summer heat.
Replace ST trailer tires at five to seven years regardless of tread depth. Trailers often sit for long periods, and UV exposure plus ozone degrade sidewalls long before the tread wears out. Check the four-digit DOT date code on the sidewall.
Choose a gooseneck once you consistently exceed about 14,000 lbs gross, need decks longer than 24 feet, or want the tightest turning and best highway stability. Bumper pulls remain more convenient for lighter loads and vehicles without an in-bed hitch.
You generally need proof of ownership such as a manufacturer's certificate of origin or signed title, a completed application for title, weight certification where required, and payment of applicable fees at your county tax office. Requirements vary by trailer weight class.
A CDL is generally required when the combined gross rating exceeds 26,000 lbs and the trailer is rated over 10,000 lbs. Non-commercial Class A licenses cover some heavy personal combinations. Confirm current requirements with the Texas DPS before hauling.
Place roughly 60 percent of the weight in the front half of the trailer, centered side to side and as low as practical. Secure everything before moving; a shifting load changes tongue weight mid-trip and can trigger sway.
Sway usually comes from insufficient tongue weight, rear-biased loading, overinflated or worn tires, or excessive speed. Slow down gradually, avoid steering corrections, and if fitted, apply the trailer brakes manually. Then stop and rebalance the load.
Steel is stronger per dollar, easily repaired by any welder, and preferred for heavy commercial duty. Aluminum resists corrosion and cuts weight, which helps payload and fuel economy. Coastal Texas buyers often accept the aluminum premium for corrosion resistance.
Rinse road salt and fertilizer residue off the frame, keep the powder coat or paint intact, touch up chips immediately, and store under cover when possible. Pay special attention to the inside of tube frames, fender mounts, and weld seams.
You need working stop, tail, and turn signals, reflectors, properly rated safety chains crossed under the coupler, a breakaway system on brake-equipped trailers, secure load restraints, and a correctly sized ball and coupler that latch and pin.
Open trailers cost less, weigh less, and load from any side. Enclosed trailers protect cargo from weather and theft and function as mobile storage. If you leave tools loaded overnight, the enclosed premium usually pays back quickly.

Well-maintained tandem axle dump trailers, equipment trailers, and goosenecks retain value best because commercial demand stays strong. Documented maintenance, intact paint, good tires, and clean wiring materially increase resale price.
You can, but light-duty trailers wear out quickly under daily commercial cycles. Commercial-grade frames, axles, brakes, and wiring are designed for repeated loading and higher duty cycles, and the cost difference is usually recovered in reduced downtime.
