Leaf spring versus torsion
Leaf springs equalize load between tandem axles and are repairable anywhere. Torsion axles use rubber cords for an independent, quieter ride with a lower deck, but the whole axle is replaced when the rubber degrades.
Single, tandem, and triple
Single axles are light and maneuverable. Tandems distribute load and let you limp home on a flat. Triple axles carry heavy gooseneck loads but scrub tires in tight turns.
Hub options
Easy-lube hubs let you add grease through the spindle. Oil-bath hubs allow visual level checks and run cooler on long hauls, which matters on Texas interstate distances.
Early failure signs
Uneven tire wear, a hub that runs noticeably hotter than its neighbor, wobble under braking, or a trailer sitting visibly lower on one side all warrant immediate inspection.
