Tow rating versus payload
The advertised tow rating assumes a nearly empty truck with one driver. Passengers, fuel, tools, and tongue weight all consume payload, which is the number that usually runs out first.
GCWR
Gross Combined Weight Rating caps the total of truck plus trailer plus everything in both. Weigh your loaded combination once and you will know exactly where you stand.
Hitch class and equipment
Match the receiver class, ball mount rating, and ball size to the trailer. A weight distribution hitch can restore steering authority on heavy bumper pull loads.
Brake controller
Any trailer with electric brakes needs a properly configured controller. Set the gain with a loaded test stop so the trailer brakes engage slightly before the truck brakes.
