Load cycles matter most
A commercial crew loads and unloads dozens of times a week. Ramp hinges, gate springs, deck boards, and tie-down points see thousands of cycles a year that a residential trailer never approaches.
Specify for the harder use
Commercial buyers should step up frame gauge, choose electric brakes on all axles, select heavier ramps, and add a spare tire and mount. These upgrades are marginal at purchase and decisive in year three.
Insurance and compliance
Business use brings DOT securement standards, potential inspections, and commercial insurance requirements. Confirm coverage before a trailer starts generating revenue.
Total cost of ownership
Compare purchase price plus expected maintenance and downtime over five years. Light-duty trailers usually lose that comparison badly once labor is priced in.
